Lyon’s president, Jean-Michel Aulas, seems resigned to losing him. He confirmed that the player wants to leave and that big clubs in Europe are after him.

Ndombele has developed a reputation as one of the best young defensive midfielders in Europe, starring for Lyon as they finished third in Ligue Un and breaking into the France squad.

Champions League runners-up Tottenham Hotspur are planning to strengthen their side and have already had bids rejected for Real Betis star Giovani Lo Celso and Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele, according to reports.

Spurs haven’t signed a player for 18 months, but boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to change that this summer. The Argentine has said that he wants the club to show that they match his ambition and are prepared to make heavy investment in the squad if they are to keep progressing.

He has also hinted that he could walk away from Spurs if they don’t show the necessary commitment.

But, with the money from their Champions League run, a place in next season’s competition and increased revenues from their new stadium, Spurs can now invest in the playing staff.

Betis playmaker Lo Celso has earned rave reviews in Spain and could be seen as a replacement should Christian Eriksen leave.

Meanwhile Ndombele is the sort of defensive midfielder that Spurs need.

The Daily Mirror reported that Spurs have bod for both, and seen those bids rejected. Both would likely cost £35 million plus, which shows the level Spurs are working at.

It is expected they will make further bids during the summer.  However, they will likely face competition from other Premier League clubs as well was top clubs in continental Europe for the signature of both players.

A host of top clubs including Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing £90 million-rated Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, according to reports.

Ndombele has been a star for Lyon in Ligue Un and in the Champions League and club president Jean-Michel Aulas has said they have already turned down bids in excess of £45 million for the 21-year-old.

France Football has claimed that United are leading the race to sign the France international, although it is also said that uncertainty over the future of manager Jose Mourinho could put him off.

But, given the amount of interest, Lyon may decide to sell to the highest bidder. Aulas has previously said Lyon would want a fee around that United paid Juventus for Paul Pogba – a then-record £89 million.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has praised him recently after he played against City for Lyon in the Champions League.

While £90 million is well within the compass of United, City and Barcelona – although the fee would be a transfer record for either Manchester Club – it may well put off Spurs, who have never splashed out such a fee on a player.

Ndombele himself has remained coy on his future, saying he could have left in the summer but decided to stay, and has not regretted the decision.

“I don’t imagine how my career will go, I live it instead,” he told Canal Football Club recently. “”Of course, they are big clubs, I don’t close the door to anyone.

“When I was young I didn’t dream of being in this or that club, whether it is Real Madrid, Barcelona, City, I have never dreamed of being in a specific club like that.”

Premier League title challengers Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are set for a battle in January to sign Lyon star Tanguy Ndombele.

Spurs are said to have had a £40 million bid for him rejected in the summer. But Lyon are holding out for in excess of £55 million – especially as the 21-year-old has a contract with the club to 2023 and has broken into the France squad, according to claims in France.

His star is also rising thanks to some impressive performances this season, not least in Lyon’s win over Manchester City in the Champions League recently.

However, the London club are not expected to be put off by the price tag. Having not signed anyone in the summer, Mauricio Pochettino is expected to be active in January.

But Spurs are likely to face competition to sign him from Manchester City. Boss Pep Guardiola is looking to strengthen his central midfield and Ndombele is one of his top targets, along with Ruben Neves of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong.
