Manchester United look set to continue their summer spending after bidding for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
However, Sporting have rejected the £31 million bid, according to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
Sporting want to keep hold of their star midfielder and have offered him a contract worth £5.4 million plus bonuses, the Gazzetta reported.
Another consideration for Sporting is that if Fernandes leaves, they will have to pay the player £4.5 million.
Fernandes, 24, scored 19 goals in 31 Primera League matches last season, and 31 goals in 50 appearances in all competitions.
United are thought likely to come back with another bid. Other clubs are thought to be interested in the Portuguese international but United are the only ones to firm up their interest with a bid.
Sporting want £60 million for the player, but United are hoping to bag him for less than £40 million.
In addition, United are thought likely to make a £25 million bid for Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff this week.
