Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohammad Salah has been named African Footballer of the Year, ahead of his Premier League team-mate Sadio Mane.

Salah has been in scintillating form for the Reds this season, and is the Premier League’s leading scorer this season with 13. He had also had a stellar 2016/17 season with Roma in Serie A, being named their Player of the Season after finishing as the club’s top goalscorer with 15 goals in all competitions (14 in Serie A) and six assists. This caught the eye of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who paid a then club-record fee of £36 million to bring him to Anfield.

The 25-year-old also played a key role in Egypt qualifying for their first World Cup since 1990, scoring 5 goals in their qualification campaign, including both goals in the decisive 2–1 victory over Congo, one of which was a penalty in the last minute.

Senegalese striker Mane, who was a key player for Liverpool in the 2016/17 season and also helped his national team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, was second. Borussia Dortmund and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was third, ahead of Chelsea and Nigeria wing-back Victor Moses and RB Leipzig and Guinea midfielder Naby Keita.

Wycombe striker ‘The Beast’ jokes Klopp should sign him for Liverpool

Wycombe Wanderers striker Ade Akinfenwa – also known as ‘The Beast’ – joked on transfer deadline day that Liverpool were one striker away from winning the Premier League and should sign him as that final piece in the jigsaw!

Akinfenwa, 35, is a lifelong Reds fan and has been impressed by the team’s front three – Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohammad Salah – this season, but said they needed something else to maintain a title challenge – a big striker.

Given that Akinfenwa is 5’11’’ and 16 stone, they don’t come much bigger than him.

He told Squawka: “I think we’re one striker away, I think we’ll be immense for the first half of the season and blow up a bit in the second half but I think we’ll challenge.

“Klopp should come and get me!

“I need pace around me and they have obscene pace up front with Mane, Firmino [and] Salah. If you put me in there and get some crosses in the box I’d score goals.”

Akinfenwa has scored 4 goals for Wycombe this season, so he is a man in form. However, despite this, Klopp didn’t pick up the phone to him. Still, there is always January…

Liverpool join Arsenal and Real Madrid in race to sign Kylian Mbappe

Liverpool have become the latest club to join the race to sign Monaco wonderkid Kylian Mbappe, and are looking to challenge Arsenal and Real Madrid for his signature.

It has been claimed in Spanish newspaper Marca that Liverpool have made two bids for Mbappe – both rejected by Monaco – but that the club is still interested.

However, it is still thought that Real Madrid remain in pole position should Mbappe choose to leave Monaco. The Spanish champions have the spending power to outbid all the other clubs thought to be in the race for the 18-year-old.

But, should Mbappe resist the lure of the Bernabeau and look to the Premier League, perhaps to a club where he may be given more game time and less pressure to develop, then Liverpool would be in that race. For instance, they can offer Champions League football next season, which Arsenal cannot.

That said, any bid for Mbappe would have to shatter Liverpool’s record transfer fee – set only today with their £36.9 million capture of Mohammad Salah from Roma – and up to £100 million has been quoted as a potential fee. Whether Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, would be willing to splash so much is questionable.
