Champions League winners Liverpool have reportedly made a big-money bid for Lille forward Nicolas Pepe.

Pepe’s star has risen in the past year as the Ivory Coast striker scored 23 goals for Lille as they finished runners-up in Ligue Un to Paris St-Germain.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is said to be a big fan of the player and the club have made an offer for him to Lille, according to French outlet Le 10 Sport.

The 24-year-old is in the same mould as current Liverpool front players Sadio Mane and Mo Salah and would provide competition for them. Klopp is looking to strengthen his side as he prepares for another tilt at deposing Manchester City from the Premier League throne.

However, other unnamed clubs have also made bids for Pepe, so the Reds could face competition for him. Pepe is rated at £60 million so a bidding war could start.

Lille boss Christopher Galtier has already accepted his star player will be leaving this summer. He recently said: “Pepe will leave this summer. Life’s like that, football’s like that these days.”

Lille admit Arsenal target Nicolas Pepe can leave – at the right price

Lille forward Nicolas Pepe – a long-term target for Arsenal – could leave the club this summer, but only if the club receive an offer of £50 million for him, according to the club’s sporting director.

Pepe has been a star in Ligue Un this season, scoring 17 goals in 28 appearances.

Arsenal have been tracking the Ivory Coast International for some time. However, financial constraints meant the Gunners couldn’t bid for him in January. But in the summer it is expected boss Unai Emery will have funds to spend.

Lille’s sporting director Luis Campos has now admitted that an offer of about £50 million would be hard to turn down.

Speaking to French TV station Telefoot, Campos said: “We are not a rich club – it means that if a really good proposal comes in for Pepe, we have to sell him.”

However, Arsenal will face strong competition for Pepe, with Manchester United and Barcelona among the other clubs said to be interested.

It is thought that if he is sold, it would be to a side in the Champions League. Arsenal are currently in a battle for 4th place – and the final Champions League spot – in the Premier League. Whether they make it into Europe’s top tournament could have a large bearing on their attractiveness to Pepe.

Arsenal step up interest in £45 million rated Nicolas Pepe following Danny Welbeck injury

Arsenal are looking to step up their interest in signing Lille striker Nicolas Pepe in January after Danny Welbeck suffered a long-term injury last week.

The Gunners have previously been linked to a bid for Pepe, but Welbeck’s injury – he broke his ankle last week playing against Sporting Lisbon and is expected to be out for the rest of the season – has made a bid more likely, according to The Sun. Arsenal have first choice strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, but their back-up is rookie striker Eddie Nketiah.

Pepe has had a prolific start to the season, scoring 8 goals in 12 matches in Ligue Un. He has also provided a further 7 assists for Lille.

The Ivory Coast international has been watched by scouts from various clubs this season, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

The player himself has been coy over his future. In a recent interview with French TV station Telefoot he said: “I was not aware of these [transfer] rumours, although it’s nice.

“Will I leave Lille at the end of the season? We do not even know what I’ll be doing tomorrow!”

However, Lille will be loathe to let their star player leave, with coach Clement Gaultier claiming he is in “intransferable”. But a bid of £45 million may be enough to tempt the club.

Arsenal, Everton and Barcelona chase Lille star Nicolas Pepe

Arsenal and Everton, along with Spanish giants Barcelona are all considering making a bid for Lille’s £30-million rated winger Nicolas Pepe.

Pepe, 23, has scored 5 goals in 8 matches this season for Lille, including a hat-trick against Amiens. He scored 13 goals in 36 Ligue Un appearances last season.

Lille turned down a £26 million offer for the Ivory Coast international from Lyon at the end of the last transfer window, and his performances since then should guarantee more interest in him come January.

Everton are believed to have sent scouts to watch Pepe last month, according to The Mirror. Arsenal, Barcelona and Sevilla are also said to be keeping tabs on him – so a bidding war could ensue. However, Arsenal can offer Europa League football and Barcelona Champions League, which could help to sway it their way.
