Championship side Leeds United are one of several clubs trying to sign Italian goalkeeping legend Gianluigi Buffon.

Buffon, 41, has left perennial French champions Paris St-Germain but is not yet ready to retire. He spent one season in the French capital and had the option to sign for another year but did not take up the option.

Now, several clubs have contacted Buffon, who spent 17 years between the sticks at Juventus, about a potential deal – which is likely to be his last before he finally hangs up his gloves, according to Italian newspaper the Corrirere Della Sera.

Leeds United are said to be one of the sides wanting him. They lost in the Championship play-off semifinals last season. But talismanic manager Marcelo Bielsa has agreed to stay on, and the chance to play under a legend may tempt Buffon.

The other clubs understood to be interested are Porto – who are looking to replace another goalkeeping legend in Iker Cassillas, who retired after suffering a heart attack. Fluminense are the other club interested.

Italy and Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon is to join French champions Paris St-Germain on a 2-year deal, according to reports.

The 40-year-old stopper was expected to retire this summer after leaving Juventus after 18 years.

However, it was revealed a couple of weeks ago that Buffon had had a change of heart after receiving several very tempting offers, including, it has been reported, from Premier League sides Liverpool and Manchester City.

But the Corriere Dello Sport is reporting that Buffon has plumped for PSG and will sign up for 2 seasons.

Buffon has previously said that he would only join another club where he has a serous chance of winning more trophies, especially the Champions League – one of the few to elude him in his illustrious career. PSG have made no secret of their desire to win the Champions League title but have fallen at the last 16 stage in both of the past 2 seasons and are looking to strengthen again this summer.

Veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who has confirmed he is leaving Italian champions Juventus at the end of the season after 17 years with the club, has emerged as a potential target for Premier League duo Liverpool and Manchester City.

It had been widely expected that Buffon, 40, would announce his retirement this summer, but after receiving what he described as “interesting” offers, he is considering shelving his plans to quit the game.

“Up until 15 days ago it was certain and well-known that I would stop playing,” he said. “Now I have received some proposals and exciting challenges both on the field and off it.”

Buffon added that he didn’t want to play in the lower leagues: “I’m too competitive. I’ll try to follow whatever calls to my soul and my nature. If I were to continue I’d want to challenge for big honours, because that’s what I live for.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is said to have sanctioned a move for Buffon, according to The Sun. The number 1 position has not been secured in the side, with neither current incumbent Loris Karius nor Simon Migniolet convincing in the role.

City have also been thought to throw their hat into the ring, but it is likely he would be an understudy to Ederson, who has had an excellent season for the Premier League champions. Whether Buffon would accept such a role is perhaps unlikely. But with Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final – a competition Buffon has never won – that could be enough to convince the veteran stopper to join the Anfield-based club.

Liverpool are also thought to be keen on Roma’s Brazilian stopper Alisson, but the club are holding out for £87 million for him. Buffon could provide a cheaper, if more short-term solution.

Buffon concluded that he would decide next week what he will do; we will watch this space.

England take on Italy in an international friendly tonight at Wembley stadium. Players will be looking to impress England boss Gareth Southgate and ensure they are on the plane to Russia for the World Cup in the summer. The match kicks off at 8pm and it is live on ITV1. Here are the factz you need to know:

• This is the 27th meeting between the sides since they first played each other in 1933. Italy have won on 11 occasions to England’s 8.
• The sides last met 3 years ago and it ended in a 1-1 draw. Former Southampton man Graziano Pelle put Italy in front, only for Andros Townsend to equalize 11 minutes from time.
• England haven’t conceded a goal in their last 5 matches – they haven’t had 6 consecutive shut-outs since October 2006.
• The Three Lions’ victory over the Netherlands on Friday was manager Gareth Southgate’s first friendly win on his 6th attempt.
• Italy have won just 1 of their last 5 internationals – a 0-1 win over Albania. They have drawn 2 and lost 2 – to Sweden in their World Cup play-off and Argentina in a friendly.
• The Azzurri also haven’t scored in their past 3 internationals, and haven’t scored more than one goal in a match in their last 7 games.
• Jack Butland is in goal for today’s match – he became England’s youngest international goalkeeper at 19 years and 158 days old when the two sides met in 2012.
• Italy failed to make the World Cup finals for the first time since 1958 when they lost their two-legged play-off to Sweden earlier this year.
• This match will be the first meeting between the sides in England since 2002, when Italy won 1-2 at Elland Road in Leeds. Current bosses Southgate and Luigi Di Biagio both played in that match.
• If Gianluigi Buffon plays today, he will win his 177th cap for Italy – extending his record number of appearances for the Azzurri.

Gianluigi Buffon puts off Italy retirement in tribute to Davide Astori

Veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has put off his international retirement for now to play in Italy’s upcoming friendly internationals to honour the late Fiorentina captain Davide Astori.

Buffon had originally announced his international retirement – after 175 caps – last November after Italy had been knocked out of the World Cup. However, he has answered interim Azzurri boss Luigi Di Biagio’s call to play in friendlies against Argentina and England.

He also accepted the call in part because he wanted to pay tribute to Astori, who died suddenly aged 31 on March 4. “He’s a reason why I’m here,” Buffon said. “I wanted to present and respond to this feeling.”

Buffon also thought he may have let his country down had he not responded to Di Biagio’s call, adding that he always felt a sense of responsibility.

This may be a final call-up for Buffon, as the veteran stopper – now 40 – is contemplating retiring from the game completely at the end of the season.
