Chelsea ponder move for PSG star Edinson Cavani

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is weighing up a last-minute move for Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, according to reports.

Cavani, 32, had been set for a move to Atletico Madrid but the deal has collapsed. Atletico bosses were apparently unwilling to pay more than £15 million for a player who is out of contract in the summer. In addition, they would have had to have sold a big earned to accommodate Cavani’s wages – said to be more than 300,000 per week – and that didn’t materialise.

This means that Chelsea could come in and bid for the player. The Blues are light up front with Tammy Abraham injures and Lampard not appearing to rate either Olivier Giroud or Michy Batshuayi. Cavani would fit the bill and would be relatively cheap in terms of fee, and the club could afford his wages.

It is known that Cavani wants out of PSG, preferably before this transfer window shuts, and a move to London could appeal to the Uruguayan.

However, whether it comes off is another matter. PSG and Cavani could decide to sit tight until the summer – he could have a part to play in the Champions League knockout stages.

Champions League chasers Manchester United and Chelsea considering bidding for Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, after it was revealed he wants to play in the Premier League.

Italian publication Calciomercato has reported that Cavani, 32, would jump at the chance of playing in England. It is thought he is looking for a new challenge after PSG’s latest Champions League failure.

Manchester United have been interested in the Uruguayan for some time, but have never made a concrete bid for him.

Meanwhile Chelsea were reportedly in talks about bringing Cavani to Stamford Bridge a couple of years ago but a deal never materialised. However, they maintain an interest, especially given their problems up front this season.

Cavani’s striking record is impressive – he’s scored 133 goals in 181 appearances for PSG and 46 goals in 109 matches for Uruguay – so on the surface he could be the man to solve both clubs’ problems up front.

However, Chelsea still have the threat of a two-window transfer ban hanging over them, which would nix any interest. Meanwhile at 32, would Cavani fit into United’s transfer strategy, which is said to be focusing more on youth.

Other clubs would also be interested in Cavani, if he did decide to leave Paris. Former club Napoli are thought to be interested, although club president Aurelio de Laurentiis has recently said that the player would have to lower his wage demands if they were to do a deal.

Paris St-Germain allegedly make contact with Mohamed Salah over summer transfer

French side Paris St-Germain have allegedly approached Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah about the possibility of a move to the French capital in the summer.

Salah has been the standout player in the Liverpool side this season, scoring 38 goals in all competitions and chipping in with another 13 assists. Naturally, this has caught the eye of all the giants of European football.

PSG have apparently made contact with Salah already over the possibility of a move, according to Le10Sport. PSG are thought to be again looking for a marquee signing, as they continue their quest to win the Champions League, having been knocked out at the last 16 stage again this season.

Of course, PSG aren’t the only club interested in Salah. In recent weeks, there have been rumours that Real Madrid are also thinking of making a move for the Eygptian. The club is expected to have a major shake-up of its squad in the summer, and Salah could fit the bill to replace Gareth Bale or Karim Benzema.

Given his performances this season – and the inflated transfer market – Liverpool would likely seek north of £150 million for Salah, and possibly a record fee – the current record being Neymar’s £198 million move from Barcelona to PSG last summer.

However, manager Jurgen Klopp – and the Reds’ hierarchy – are unlikely to entertain the thought of selling him, having lost Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January.

Meanwhile, if they did make a move for Salah, PSG have indicated that they could be prepared to sell current striker Edinson Cavani, even though the Uruguayan striker has been prolific this season, netting 35 times in 41 appearances. There were rumours earlier in the season that he and fellow striker Neymar do not get on.

Edinson Cavani rejects big-money offer to hand over penalty duties to Neymar

The row between Paris St-Germain strike partners Neymar and Edinson Cavani shows no sign of abating, with the latest twist coming with reports saying that Cavani has rejected a big-money offer to hand over penalty taking duties to Neymar.

This all started last week when the pair rowed over who would take free-kicks and penalties. Cavani refused to cede taking a penalty to his £200 million strike partner, upsetting the Brazilian. To make matters worse, Cavani missed the penalty.

It seems the pair still haven’t made up, and Cavani is digging his heels in. He took over penalty duties at the start of last season, after Zlatan Ibrahimovic left, and doesn’t want to hand them over, feeling that after four seasons at the Parc des Princes, he deserves to have the responsibility.

PSG’s owner president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has now apparently waded into the argument, offering Cavani euro1 million (£880,000) – the bonus he would receive if he is top scorer in Ligue Un at the end of the season – to give up taking penalties to Neymar, according to French newspaper El Pais. Cavani turned down the offer, saying it is not about the money.

Similarly, Neymar was met by another intermediary and asked to forget about taking penalties, and they received a similar response: No.

The pair haven’t played together since; Neymar missed last weekend’s 0-0 draw against Montpellier with injury. However, he is set to return for PSG’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich this week. Whether the pair will play up front together hasn’t been revealed.

But if they do, is anyone else hoping PSG get a penalty, just to see what happens?
