Manchester United still targeting summer move for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho

Manchester United look set to press ahead with an £80 million move for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho this summer, according to reports.

Sancho has been a standout performer for Dortmund this year, producing a string of impressive displays and goals in the Bundesliga and Champions League. He has managed to keep more established players, such as Christian Pulisic, on the bench.

Inevitably, this has led to rumours of other clubs looking to sign the England player in the summer. The rumour about United’s interest first surfaced some weeks ago, but it is continuing to gain traction.

The Independent is the latest to report United’s interest, saying that an £80 million bid is on the cards. It is thought Sancho fits the ethos of buying young talent in, and he would provide competition for the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

Any such move would also likely hasten Alexis Sanchez’s departure from Old Trafford. The Chilean has struggled since he joined in January 2018, and could be allowed to leave, either on a permanent or season-long loan.

However, whether Sancho would come is open to question. He is enjoying life in Germany and may decide that another year starting regularly in the Bundesliga might be the best thing for his development.

History shows that while Dortmund may not want to sell, if the price is right they will do a deal.

Manchester United line up £70 million summer bid for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho

Manchester United have approached Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund about a potential move for winger Jadon Sancho, according to reports.

Sancho, 18, has been a star for Dortmund this season, becoming a regular in the side and scoring 7 goals in 21 appearances the Bundesliga, along with a handful of assists. He has also kept Christian Pulisic out of the side, who will join Chelsea in the summer for £60 million.

Dortmund are said to want £70 million for the England star, according to The Sun. However, 15% of that would go to his previous club Manchester City, who inserted a sell-on clause when they sold him to Dortmund for £8 million back in 2017.

City also have an agreement where if a club comes into buy Sancho they can match the offer if they want to.

However, it is thought unlikely that Sancho would want to return to City, at least while Pep Guardiola is in charge.

Sancho would provide competition up front to United’s other young stars, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.

Should Sancho come to United – and a move back to England would be tempting, despite him being happy in Germany – then it could hasten the departure of Alexis Sanchez, who has failed to recapture his best form since joining from Arsenal.

This is not the first time this rumour has surfaced. United are thought to be planning a rebuild of the squad and the summer and Sancho would fit the profile of player they are looking for. But much will depend on who is installed as permanent manager and who they want to bring in.

Manchester United consider £90 million summer bid for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho

Manchester United are watching the progress of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, with a view to making a bid to sign him in the summer.

Sancho has been a revelation at Dortmund since he joined the club from Manchester City in the summer of 2017. He has been a regular in the first team this season, making 19 appearances in the Bundesliga and scoring 6 goals, as well as providing another 2 assists. Indeed, he has kept Christian Pulisic out of the first team – who has agreed to join Chelsea for £58 million in the summer.

His form has also caught Gareth Southgate’s attention, and he gave him his full England debut last year.

Now considered one of Europe’s hottest talents, Sancho’s form has been noted at United. Despite not having a permanent manager in place, the club is planning its summer business. While a centre-back is a priority, a right-sided midfielder is also being sought and Sancho would fit the bill.

Dortmund are said to value the 18-year-old at £90 million. While they would be loathe to sell him, they have shown in the past – such as with the sale of Pulisic and Ousmane Dembele for £135 million to Barcelona – all players have a pricetag.

However, Manchester City have a buyback clause where they can match any accepted offer for Sancho. But it would seem unlikely that he would return to the Etihad Stadium while Pep Guardiola is still manager.

It is likely that other big European clubs will be also monitoring Sancho and would likely bid if United tried to tempt him from Dortmund.

But Sancho appears settled at Dortmund and whether he would want to move to City’s main rivals is not known.

Chelsea sign Borussia Dortmund forward Christian Pulisic for £58 million

Chelsea have signed Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund for £58 million – but will loan him back to the German side for the rest of the season.

The Blues has been linked with a deal for the USA international for some time and have moved quickly to secure his signature. Pulisic had also been linked with Liverpool and Arsenal.

Pulisic has been expected to leave Bundesliga leaders Dortmund aa he has refused to sign a new contract.

His deal with Dortmund ran out in June 2020, so the club knew that if they were to receive anything like market value for him they would have to sell him in this transfer window.

While Pulisic is rated as one of the biggest prospective talents in Europe, his time on the pitch has been limited this season thanks to the emergence of England’s Jadon Sancho.

Pulisic has previously spoken of his desire to play in England. “It is a privilege to sign for such a legendary club,” he said today.

However, he added on Twitter that he leaves Dortmund with “a heavy heart”.

Pulisic made his debut for Dortmund in January 2016 when he was 17. He made his debut for the USA two months later. Since his debut he has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions.

Michael Zorc, a director at Dortmund, said: “It was always Christian’s dream to play in the Premier League.
“That certainly has to do with his American background, and as a result we were unable to extend his contract.

“Against this background, we have decided to accept an extremely lucrative bid by Chelsea, given the low contract maturity.”

Champions League last 16 draw announced – Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Manchester United all face tough ties

The draw for the Champions League round of 16 has been made and all four remaining English clubs face tough tests if they are to progress to the quarter-finals.

Liverpool will face German giants Bayern Munich, with the first tie at Anfield. While the Bundesliga champions have struggled this season – by their standards – they performances in Europe have been good and will provide a stern test.

Manchester City also have German opposition in the form of Schalke. As the seeded side, they will travel to Gelsenkirchen for the first leg, before the return at the Etihad Stadium. This might appear fairly straightforward for Pep Guardiola’s men as Schalke are struggling in the Bundesliga, currently in 13th place with 15 points from 15 games.

Making it a hat-trick of Anglo-German ties, Spurs face Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund. The sides last met in the Europa league in the 2015/16 season, where Dortmund ran out 5-1 winners on aggregate.

Manchester United have arguably the toughest looking tie on paper, having drawn French champions Paris St-Germain. PSG are running away with the Ligue 1 title again currently, having opened up a 10-point gap to their rivals already, winning 14 of their 16 matches and drawing the others. However, the Qatari-backed side did lose to Liverpool in the group stage.

In the complicated draw sides from the same country couldn’t be picked to face each other. Group winners play the away in the first leg.

Elsewhere, reigning champions Real Madrid face Dutch champions Ajax. Meanwhile Barcelona have French opposition in the form of Lyon.

The draw in full:

Schalke v Manchester City

Atletico Madrid v Juventus

Manchester United v Paris St-Germain

Tottenham v Borussia Dortmund

Lyon v Barcelona

Roma v Porto

Ajax v Real Madrid

Liverpool v Bayern Munich

First leg ties will take place on 12-13 and 19-20 February, with the return fixtures on 5-6 and 12-13 March.
