Real Madrid are turning up the heat on David De Gea and are determined to prise him away from Old Trafford in a £30 million.
The Spanish giants have sounded out De Gea’s representatives and are desperate to make him the successor to Iker Casillas who is expected to leave next summer.
De Gea has 18 months left on his current deal and United boss Louis Van Gaal is confident he will commit to a new contract after establishing himself as one of the best keepers in the world.
But United’s move to sign Victor Valdes on an 18-month contract is a clear sign they are covering all eventualities as they sweat on De Gea’s future.
Real Madrid are ready to pay £30m this summer and are now going all out to get their man, believing he would be interested in a return to Spain.
It is a dangerous game for United as they know allowing him to go into the final 12 months of his contract would be a massive financial gamble.
Asked if he was confident De Gea would be at United long-term, Van Gaal said: “I think so, yes.
“I think there is no problem for him to sign. It’s the same as other players. You can ask other players and I can answer the same.
“It’s always like that: when you are a fixed line-up player, then probably you are the best, and then the manager is very happy that a player that is fixed in the line-up will stay. It’s always like that.”
