Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping to make a splash in the transfer market this month by signing PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn for £25 million.
United are scouting the 21-year-old winger with a view to making an offer, according to The Sun. Bergwijn has scored 9 goals in 16 Eredivisie matches so far this season. He has also broken through into the Dutch national side, winning 2 caps for Ronald Koeman’s side.
Bergwijn has previously been watched by Liverpool and United, according to Dutch media reports.
Solskjaer is looking to add width to United’s team. Previously this season strikers Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have been deployed in wide roles, but they are most effective in more central positions, but Bergwijn, as an old-fashioned winger, would fit into Solskjaer’s more attacking set-up.
However, PSV will be reluctant to sell one of their stars. He is contracted to the Dutch champions until 2022, and last summer the club turned down bids from Bordeaux and Torino for Bergwijn, so they can be expected to push a hard bargain.
