Louis van Gaal, the Manchester United manager, may have agreed terms with PSV Eindhoven’s Memphis Depay, but the capture of the 21-year-old Holland international is just the start of a huge summer of spending from the Old Trafford club.
It is now the time of the season where results can become more unpredictable – as Hull’s double win last week against Crystal Palace and Liverpool showed – so tipping who to pick gets harder. Nevertheless, out with the crystal ball and here we go.
Chelsea can wrap up the title this week, so will be extra motivated against Palace. Eden Hazard and the fit-again Loic Remy would seem sensible picks this week for captain. However, as Liverpool fans remember (but would rather not) it was against the Eagles that their title challenge came spectacularly unstuck last season, so a punt on the in-form Yannick Bolasie might be worthwhile if you think the Blues could bottle it.
Elsewhere, Arsenal are away to Hull. While Hull’s upturn in form is as sudden as it is surprising, the Gunners should have enough firepower to overcome them. The usual suspects – Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil – should feature prominently.
Meanwhile, in-form Leicester City play Newcastle United – who are still in free-fall and not yet safe from the drop – at the King Power. This should be a nailed-on home win and strikers Leonardo Ulloa and Jamie Vardy could be worth including. Likewise winger Marc Albrighton has hit form and could provide useful assist points.
Finally, on the defensive side, Manchester United play West Bromwich Albion. While Sir Alex Ferguson’s last game in charge was a 5-5 thriller against the Albion, I can’t see that happening again and De Gea and his defenders could be on for a clean sheet.
